Coming up next week....
In this episode we will be reminiscing about our childhood
past and compare it to what we see with today's youth activities. In many ways
it seems sad to not see kids playing outside, in the parks, riding bikes or
other simple outdoor activities like we used to do. However, times have changed
and our perception of a safe place to play and unsupervised play time has taken
a downward turn.
Gone are the days when you could let your son or daughter
run around with the neighborhood kids and not have to worry about what they
were doing or where they were. There was always at least one or two of the
neighborhood parents' home after school, parents talked to each other in their
own version of a neighborhood watch program, and kids would be allowed to play
outside until it was time for dinner or time to settle down for the
evening.
For the past three decades we have watched this
free-spirited form of play diminish before our eyes. Today the concerns have
switched from worrying about what time the kids will be home to now having to
worry about strangers abducting kids for trafficking rings or kids becoming
addicted to their virtual reality world of on-line gaming.
What do you think will be the second and third order of
effects that threaten both the physical and mental health of our youth? Do you
think it's possible to bring back the days of old and allow our kids to live
the experience of safe, active, and unsupervised play?
