Episode 3: The Art of Play, Where Did It Go?

Coming up next week....

In this episode we will be reminiscing about our childhood past and compare it to what we see with today's youth activities. In many ways it seems sad to not see kids playing outside, in the parks, riding bikes or other simple outdoor activities like we used to do. However, times have changed and our perception of a safe place to play and unsupervised play time has taken a downward turn.

Gone are the days when you could let your son or daughter run around with the neighborhood kids and not have to worry about what they were doing or where they were. There was always at least one or two of the neighborhood parents' home after school, parents talked to each other in their own version of a neighborhood watch program, and kids would be allowed to play outside until it was time for dinner or time to settle down for the evening.

For the past three decades we have watched this free-spirited form of play diminish before our eyes. Today the concerns have switched from worrying about what time the kids will be home to now having to worry about strangers abducting kids for trafficking rings or kids becoming addicted to their virtual reality world of on-line gaming.

What do you think will be the second and third order of effects that threaten both the physical and mental health of our youth? Do you think it's possible to bring back the days of old and allow our kids to live the experience of safe, active, and unsupervised play?

Episode 2: Stranded

Can you imagine what you would do if you were ever stranded on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere? Now, the likelihood of that ever happening is extremely low, but let's put our imagination and cognitive thinking to the test.

In this podcast, we are going to use a scenario to stimulate your cognitive thinking. The scenario we are using is entitled “Stranded on a Deserted Island.” We will use this scenario and present questions to stimulate thoughts and possible actions. We use the stranded on a deserted island scenario because it's simple and stimulates a lot of thought and digs deep into your knowledge of survival and ability to cope in a stressful environment.

This may not sound like fun now but wait until you hear the questions! We will also be reaching out to several of our listeners and getting their answers so we can compare and contrast thoughts and ideas on how to survive this epic scenario.

If you’re old enough, maybe the TV show “Gilligan's Island” comes to mind or the TV series “Alone.” Either way, this is a great opportunity to let your imagination thrive and open your internal survival strategy. Listen in and see if your survival instinct keeps you alive….

Episode 1 "Minnesota Nice"

Welcome to Minnesota, the home of the juicy lucy hamburger, the milky way candy bar, SPAM, and caribou coffee. A place where you may hear our motto “L’Etoile du Nord” or "Star of the North" spoken in some form of Scandinavian accent while being surrounded by our 10,000 lakes that are frozen over 5 months of the year. A place where ice fishing is a religion, wild rice has its own festival and home-made tater tot hotdish is served up while relaxing up in the Boundary Waters.

Is this a real thing or is "Minnesota Nice" just a fabricated way to describe how nice Minnesotan's really are? Ok, let's not get carried away, Minnesota nice is really a cultural expression with a double-edged sword. Minnesota Nice doesn't necessarily mean that people who reside in Minnesota are really nice, friendly, polite or non-confrontational people. Not all residents in Minnesota are willing to lend a helping hand or go out of their way to help someone in need. But please don't misunderstand this, there are always people that are willing to help, share a meal or help someone get out of a jam, but that goes for just about any place you go. However, this Minnesota nice stereotype is really a smoke screen used to disguise the true nature of many Minnesotans.

Like our hometown professional sports teams, Minnesotan's will give you hope, but more likely lead you down a path of despair. This passive-aggressive nature is what sets Minnesotans apart. It's my belief that "Minnesota Nice" is nothing more than a marketing myth. You walk down the street of Minneapolis, and you will see that most people won't even make eye contact with you. That is however, unless you stand out as "different,' then you might see a head turn. Not to say that Minnesota isn't a nice place to live, that is if you can take 5-6 months of winter, but just be aware that this "Minnesota Nice" stereotype is not all that is seems to be underneath it's surface.

Join us as next week (January 17, 2023) as Kat and I discuss some of the characteristics that we see in everyday Minnesota life and what we call Minnesota Narcissism.
